Already somewhat of a star in his native Denmark, Mads Mathias is a vocalist/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, who has captured the hearts of music lovers with his charismatic performances, spirited personality and creative original songs.
Inspired and influenced by the great jazz vocalists of the past and present from Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra to Harry Connick Jr, and with a deep respect for the crooner tradition, Mathias is nevertheless an original talent with a unique and effortlessly charming vocal delivery and a skill for writing catchy and memorable, stylishly crafted tunes.
His first release as a soloist, ‘Free Falling’, is a hugely ambitious project with contributions from twenty-five ‘hand-picked’ musicians in a mix of big band, strings and small group arrangements. Ten of the songs are originals by Mathias, who also performs saxophone, trumpet and piano alongside his
vocals, with arrangements by himself and Peter Jensen.
In Mathias’s words: “I decided early on not to compromise or use shortcuts and not let time or money dictate, but only to stop when I arrived at the
sound I had in my head”.
The resulting critically-acclaimed album is a set of entrancing songs with the feel of timeless swing-era classics, skillfully crafted into a seamless coherent whole, with Mathias’s vocals ranging from playful and humorous to the depth and vulnerability demonstrated on the final ballad ‘Colorblind’
“An international star in the making” – Gaffa
Mads Mathias grew up partly in his native town of Silkeborg, Denmark and partly in Tanzania, in a musical home with 34 instruments, which he explored from infancy. The saxophone became his main instrument, but at the age of 17 he injured his hand in a car accident, losing three fingers. Afraid that his playing days were over, he began to sing and write songs. Fortunately the rehabilitation of his hand enabled him to play the saxophone once again and he was accepted to study at the Copenhagen Rhythmic Music Conservatory, where he received a diploma in 2007.
Besides fronting his own Orchestra and Quartet, Mathias appears regularly with the Six City Stompers, the Tivoli Big Band and the prestigious Danish Radio Big Band, and has performed in venues across the world from the DR Koncerthuset and Roskilde Festival in Denmark to the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing.
Free Falling’ won him a Danish Music Award for ‘Best New Danish Jazz Artist of the Year’ as well as a nomination for ‘Danish Vocal Release of year’. He also won an ‘Honorable Mention’ at the International Songwriting Competition for his song ‘Fool for Love’.
The album has received extensive airplay on Danish radio stations DR P1, DR P4, P8 JAZZ and across Europe.

About The Mighty Mocambos and their many incarnations have released dozens of 45s and several albums on their own imprint Mocambo Records and other labels such as Kay Dee, Truth & Soul, Tramp, Légère and Favorite Recordings, to name a few. They have collaborated with musical legends such as Afrika Bambaataa, Lee Fields or Kenny Dope, put new talent like Gizelle Smith and Caroline Lacaze on the map, brought Caribbean steel drums to funk clubs with their alter ego Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band, and have toured through all civilized parts of the continent and beyond for the better part of the last years. Their unique style and trademark sound are loved by peers, fans and critics alike and distinguishes them from mere retro-copycat-acts as well as overproduced plastic soul. The Mighty Mocambos continue to deliver their brand of funk with blazing horns, soulful guitars, driving drums and basslines combined with an extra bit of quirkiness. When not producing records for one of their many incarnations and collaborations, the band is touring steadily. Whoever witnessed a concert will tell you about the musicality, passion, energy, humour and joy that the band loves to bring to the people. Background What started out years ago as a take on “deep funk” and its associated vinyl culture has completely grown into its own oeuvre d’art. With the launch of their production studio and record label in 2006, things started to gain momentum. Apart from self-releasing the group’s own recordings, Mocambo Records became a household name by putting out highly collectable vinyl 45s by today’s best funk outfits as well asunearthing lost library funk treasures. The Mighty Mocambos however did not restrict themselves solely to their own label. Their interpretation of the Furious Five classic “The Message”, released under a pseudonym on an obscure phantasy label without proper distribution, got picked up and remixed by Grammy- nominated producer legend Kenny Dope (Masters at Work, Bucketheads). Their first single with UK funk singer Gizelle Smith, “Working Woman”, became an overnight smash and a prime-time club favourite of funk & soul DJs worldwide. Initially released on the Finnish private press imprint Old Capital, it got the remix treatment by Kenny Dope and a re-release on Kay Dee Records as well. After earning their credits through vinyl 45s, the band stepped up their game with the full- length “This Is Gizelle Smith & the Mighty Mocambos” in 2009. The album received rave reviews, got lots of airplay – and sold a bunch of physical copies too. Its success led to an extensive tour throughout Europe with club dates from Marseille to Oslo, performances at massive festivals such as the Printemps de Bourges in France and live radio appearances at respected FMs such as the BBC and Radio Nova. With the following album “The Future Is Here” (2011), the band stepped further into the spotlight and explored new sounds with features by hiphop legends Afrika Bambaataa and Charlie Funk, French singer Caroline Lacaze and German rare groove queen Su Kramer, while manifesting their unique raw funk sound and refining their unmistakable instrumental style that had long gained international reputation. The album was toured extensively, including a legendary performance with Afrika Bambaataa at Hamburg’s Reeperbahn Festival (covered by ARTE TV), support gigs for Lee Fields and headline shows at renowned venues such as Amsterdam’s Paradiso, Islington Assembly Hall in London, Paris’ Bellevilloise, Tempo Club in Madrid, or at home at Hamburg’s Mojo Club. After producing the critically acclaimed debut album “En Route” (2013) of French soul singer Caroline Lacaze, where their adapted their sound to deliver a stunning mix of French Beat, Soul & Psychedelic Rock, the band went on to record a full length under their moniker Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band. Their interpretation of 50 Cent’s P.IM.P. had long become a cult classic and was often mistaken for the original sample. The group’s approach in stretching the boundaries of funk by adding Caribbean steel pans caught the interest of Brooklyn’s finest label Truth & Soul who signed the band for the album “55”, an explosive mix of funk and hip hop cover versions as well as original compositions that showcase the band’s singularity in today’s funk circuit. The Mighty Mocambos’ recent album “Showdown” (2015) sets yet another cornerstone in their prolific career as a globally active instrumental funk outfit. While maintaining their organic approach of recording real musicians live on tape, the group has refined their trademark sound with a dramatic edge, a hard hitting production and ventures into less obvious musical territories, with a diverse list of special guests ranging from German film composer icon Peter Thomas to hiphop pioneer Afrika Bambaataa.

It was back in the 1980s and through the late, great John Peel that the teenage 'Jazzman' Gerald started to get into a wider variety of music than the usual mix of pop and rock that everyone else was into. Peel sometimes threw on the odd old jazz, blues or R&B side - even some funk at times - and it was these oldies but goodies that struck a chord in his musical imagination. This was all before the internet existed, so in order to get closer to hear more of these amazing sounds he made the move from his home town of Middlesbrough to London. As far as music is concerned, this was the centre of the universe, and it was also where all the records were. Or so he thought...
Most of the records that caught his ear were American in origin, and as such were highly priced in the capital city, way beyond what he could afford. So he saved up some money in order to fly to the US to unearth, discover and buy these old and obscure records. Living on a budget and sleeping on floors, he travelled throughout the US to find old LPs & 45s. Finding them in quantity and at low prices, he established Jazzman Records to import the records back to the UK, and set up a mailorder business based around his new record stall in Camden Market.
In the mid-â90s the records started to become harder to find, the American stores and dealers began to put their prices up, and continual demand caused prices to start rising. So Gerald decided to start his Jazzman label in order to reissue the records that were either most in demand or were so rare that people who would never otherwise get to enjoy hearing them would be able to do so. These days some of the rarer records can now fetch thousands of dollars, so we endeavour to acquire the rights to reissue them so everyone can listen, not just the lucky few who can afford the high prices.
t can take a lot of time, effort and money to locate some of the old guys who made these old records, but to Gerald itâs worth it. Having met many artists and musicians on his travels to the US, Gerald has great respect for them, their music and their struggle to get their records made and heard all those years ago. Jazzman now employs Fryer, Orsi, Liam and Dom to help run the website and many record labels. We now over 90 titles reissued on the Jazzman series of 45s, and over 50 albums on CD and LP. There are also almost many more titles on our Jukebox Jam, FUNK45, SOUL7, TTShake, Popcorn, Fryers and Soul Spectrum labels, with new 45s released every month!
Name: Jazzman Gerald
Job title: Jazzman
Some things you like: Music & records, cacti, Japanese food, cats, real ale, hawaiian shirts
Some things you dislike: Kenny G, rain, garlic
Some info about you: I started the Jazzman label in 1998 when I realised that the demand for rare soul, funk n' jazz records far outstripped their supply. Prices of the original records were getting higher and bootlegs were rife, so I decided to start a label determined to reissue my favourite rarities legally, on vinyl, and with full respect to the artist, wherever possible telling their side of how their records were made and their life in music. We continue the journey to this day and beyond, with ourfamily of labels including Jazzman, Jukebox Jam, Fryers, Soul Spectrum, SOUL7, FUNK45, Stark Reality, Popcorn and TTSHAKE.

Born and raised in New York City from Italian descent, Noemi Nuti is an up-and-coming jazz and Latin vocalist and songwriter currently residing in London.
Having developed an interest in music at an early age she started to play the harp at the age of 8 and went on to study with Harriet Ewing as part of her BMus at Brunel University when she moved to London aged 18. It was, however, only at 21 that she discovered jazz and vocal improvisation and ever since then it has been her driving focus. In 2008-09 she took part in the Tomorrow’s Warrior’s project, ‘Jazz Alive’ exploring the British heritage in Jazz for young and talented musicians. Led by Soweto Kinch, Gary Crosby, Orphy Robinson and Zoe Rahman the group performed around the U.K. and culminated with a concert at Soweto Kinch’s ‘Flyover Show’ in Birmingham. In 2008 as part of the London Jazz Festival, Ms Nuti also performed with the Matthew Herbert Big Band, with lead vocalist Eska Mtungwazi as part of a choir of volunteers at the at the Royal Festival Hall.
She studied improvisation and composition at Trinity College of Music in 2009 with Anita Wardell, Nia Lynn, Pete Churchill, Simon Purcell, Liam Noble, Julian Siegal, Martin Speake and Barak Schmool. She performed with Norma Winstone at the London Jazz Festival as part of the Trinity Vocal small group in 2010, a highlight amongst many performing opportunities, and graduated with an MA in Jazz Performance in 2012.
Ms Nuti has quickly involved herself in many projects including a songwriting collaboration with pianist/composer, Andrew McCormack performing the new work with his trio. Inspiring her love for Brazilian music, Ms Nuti is one of the lead singers of the British samba band Rhythms of the City led by Barak Schmool and has toured Brazil in December/January 2012/2013 collaborating and performing with lead Brazilian acts Monobloco and Sargento Pimenta, with who she has represented ROTC when playing on BBC Merseyside, Liverpool. After a successful summer UK tour she is due to tour Brazil in December 2013.
She is also a member of The London Vocal Project (LVP) led by Pete Churchill which has launched a first collaboration album with British jazz legend Kenny Wheeler at Kings Place in May 2013 as well as a new collaboration with Circle Song Vocal Master Albert Hera Alongside this she has been a regular performer with NYJO (National Youth Jazz Orchestra) and now often leads the singer’s rehearsals.
She has participated in a competition organised for Young Vocalists by the Worshipful Company of Musicians that was held in September 2013 at Pizza Express Jazz Club.
Ms Nuti is now focusing on developing her own Latin influenced music with her newly formed band exploring improvisation and deep lyrical content within song structures for her debut album recorded in January 2014 and due to be released in January 2015.
Thus far in 2014, Noemi has performed around London at a number of prestigious venues, which have included the Crazy Coqs in Soho, The 606 Club in Chelsea and, most recently, she opened at Islington Assembly Hall for the legendary Brazilian singer/songwriter/instrumentalist Marcos Valle to a capacity crowd.
