Sigurdur Rögnvaldsson is an Icelandic guitarist based in Helsinki, Finland. He graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Improvisation from the Academy of Music and Drama in Gothenburg, Sweden. He holds a Master's Degree in Jazz from the Royal Collage of Music, Stockholm. In his musical endeavours abroad, Rögnvaldsson has managed to form his own bands that create and perform their own music. His musical style remains hard to be categorised: It is comprised of modern sounds with jazz and rock influences, with a heavy reliance on improvisation. His sound is often aggressive, slightly overdriven yet thrives for the pure sound of the electric guitar, achieved by thick strings, high action and tube amplifiers. In addition, he expands his sound with effect pedals. “But here is a musician who has listened to a lot of metal music, and is now creating compositions at times lyrical, but which frequently burst with intense interaction, rhythm and also humor. It makes for intriguing and above all lively music.” - Anthony Shaw, All about Jazz One of Sigurdur’s main band sis the powerful trio Equally Stupid where Sigurdur plays a baritone guitar and often takes on the roll of the bass. Along with Sigurdur are Finnish saxophone player Pauli Lyytinen and Swiss drummer David Meier. The trio's music is imaginative, rhythmic, furious, intense, raw yet melodic. Sigurdur’s lates band is Sigurdur Rögnvaldsson’s Dark Forest where Sigurdur leads the band and composes all the music. In October 2015 the band released their debut album Kisima on Sigurdur’s own label, Hekla Productions. Kisima is a concept album that invites the listeners to a journey through a dark and mystical forest, full of mutated creatures and their strange yet captivating stories. Among his other ongoing projects include such various performances as the duo acts with the Finnish guitarist Raoul Björkenheim, Eyjafjallajökull with the Finnish drummer Tatu Rönkkö and Fuzz N’ Us with the Danish drummer Christian Windfeld and the Finnish band Uinuva.
