ALBUMS:
Over the past decade pianist Mathias Landæus has emerged as one of the most personal voices of Swedish jazz. His music is characterized by honesty, spontaneity, passion, and playfulness. His recorded output ranges from straight ahead jazz to free form to electronica. He has toured with musicians like Benny Golson, Tim Hagans, Lina Nyberg, Timbuktu and Magnus Lindgren. He has released ten albums as a leader.
Mathias Landæus was born in Lund, Sweden in1969. He grew up in a musical family and started improvising on the piano as a child. In his teens he started playing in local jazz, soul and hip hop bands. In 1992 he moved to New York to study jazz and classical music at The Mannes College Of Music. Among his piano teachers were Richie Beirach and Jaki Byard. Upon returning to Sweden in 1995, he was immediately signed to the Amigo label and his first album "Blåbete" was released to much critical acclaim. During the years that followed Landæus got firmly rooted in Stockholm. He vitalized the local scene by creating an oasis for jazz musicians and listeners at the small club "Glenn Miller Café" where he led the house band several nights a week. This became an important inspiration for the next generation of budding jazz musicians. During these years Mathias played with many prominent Swedish jazz musicians from all generations.
Between 2002 and 2004 he held the piano chair in the Norrbotten Big Band which was led by Tim Hagans. Between 2002 and 2008 he was been a member of singer Lina Nyberg's band, a very creative and expressive unit that strayed as far as Brazil and Vietnam. Among his own projects are the band “House of Approximation” which has been featured on three well-recieved albums and electronica/nu jazz project Reunion. In 2009 he formed a trio with legendary bassist Palle Danielsson and celebrated drummer Jon Fält. Their album debut “Opening” was released on MA Recordings.
Since 2010 Landæus plays regularly in Lund at the club “Underground”. Acting as a curator, he invites some of the best musicians in Scandinavia and puts together a new constellation each week.

The Boogie Wonderland Show - 10/09/2015 - Mathias Landaeus in Conversation by Radio Winchcombe on Mixcloud
Stretch Trio was formed as an outlet for music written by EWI and Saxophonist, Andy French. The original idea behind the compositions was to create a sound that was accessible to a wide audience, whilst remaining rooted within the jazz idiom. The unusual line-up of sax, guitar and drums demanded some innovative approaches to playing from each of the members, enabling Stretch Trio to quickly form their own distinctive sound. In December 2014 the trio won the prestigious Peter Whittingham Award, they faced a panel of experts including trombonist Dennis Rollins, saxophonist Pete Wareham, and Justin McKenzie of London promoter Jazz re:freshed. The group, were the unanimous choice to receive the £4,000 development award through Help Musicians UK. In November 2014, Stretch Trio recorded their debut album, Antithesis. This is the first official documentation of the bands sound. This Album will function as a timeline displaying how the bands sound has developed since its formation, including some of the first compositions that they played together. Early in 2014 they were given the opportunity to perform at the 'Gateshead International jazz festival' after winning the prestigious 'Jazz North Introduces' award. As well as this high profile performance sharing the bill with artists such as Bill Frisell, Esperanza Spaulding, Jack Dejohnette, Polar Bear and Jean Touisant they were awarded two days of mentoring with internationally acclaimed saxophonist, Ian Dixon. These intense mentoring sessions benefited all three musicians individually as well as developing the ensemble both in performance and composition. In order to explore a vast array of textures within the small ensemble, Stretch Trio have implemented the use of loops and various effects. This allows them to explore genres outside of the Jazz idiom. Keep in touch with Stretch Trio via Facebook, Twitter or email for news on the album, gigs and everything else in between!
